Early Reading First Program

Secretary of education arne duncan today announced the award of more than 1088 million in early reading first grants to 28 local education agencies and other public or private organizations in 18 states and washington dc to improve the school readiness of young children especially those from low income families. This program supports local efforts to enhance the oral language cognitive and early reading skills of preschool age children especially those from low income families through strategies materials and professional development that are grounded in scientifically based reading research.

The mission of early reading first is to insure that all children enter kindergarten with the necessary cognitive language and emergent literacy skills to succeed in school. Funds are allocated to states according to the proportion of children age 5 to 17 who reside within the state and who are from families with incomes below the poverty line.
